Personalizing Your Point of View

July 20, 2017 by Karrie Seaton

We get asked on the daily what J&K's design style is... our quick answer is that we strive to have a personalized style for every client and project.

Every single person that comes to us for help has a story, they come from somewhere and strive to end up somewhere. Our goal in designing and styling is to emphasis their point of view, in their space. There are several ways we feel that this goal can be achieved, but today we are going to deep dive into our favorite.

Whether your design style initially seems contemporary, traditional, or somewhere in the middle... everyone has material items that speak to them. These items might remind them of a childhood memory, a place that they hold dearly, or a person that made a huge impact on their life. THESE THINGS ARE IMPORTANT. We think it is extremely beneficial both emotionally and aesthetically to surround yourself with things that have meaning.

When searching for that special piece, we would recommend that you look in two places.

1. Your Attic- This place might seem scary, but we know you have some good treasures up there! These items are already important, because for some darn reason you are still holding on to them. Instead of boxing up hundreds of old photos, and hiding away your grandfathers camera collection, pull them out! Intentionally select your favorite ones and display them around your home. These items add value to your life and they can add character to the design of your home.

2. A Flea Market- It is hotter than hades, but all of the sweating will be worth it. If you are like me, and have moved around way too much, you probably have not been able to hang on to everything. Take a stroll through a flea market, and I promise you will run across something that brings back a memory! After running across that obscenely large milk glass collection, if you immediately think of spending the summers at your aunts house, then I bet that item would work great in your home.

While forging through clients attics, or braving the heat at a fabulous flea market, there are a few categories of items that are always winners!

To be clear, this process of styling your home is not about consuming or filling your life with random things.

It is about making a house your home. It is about utilizing meaningful objects that bring you joy when you see them. And it is about creating conversation pieces that allow you to share important memories with those who walk into your space. For those readers who live in Nashville, our Nashville Flea Market is taking place this weekend! Check here for more details and happy hunting! -Abby Gifford
